the whole "bushing" is oil impregnated bronze bearing material, so it acts as a bearing on all sides, on the bolt side and the thrust side against the transmission shift fork. The shifter may be too stiff if you overtighten the bolt, which puts more thrust pressure on the side of the bearing, but I have found that it will wear a little naturally over a 1-2 month period and shift effort will return to normal. I researched various designs, including needle bearings, ball bearings, thrust bearings, etc, keep in mind there are dimension constraints as well as design constraints - the bushing must act as a bearing against the bolt and a thrust bearing against the fork. The thrust bearings I looked at will not work or fit properly. The bronze bushing is by far the simplest workable design that is economical.
